Finca integral organic Loroco

E-mail Print PDF

The crickets sing their songs in the evening, we put wood in the stove in iron, abuela (grandmother) and Mauricia discuss. May be about food for the evening or about the garden or maybe some gossips, but we do not understand because they speak Bribri, indigenous language of the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica, like a melody for ours ears...
We here at the Finca (farm) Loroco, which is an organic farm, where they  also produce native seeds. As Ocra, whose seed is used to make a kind of coffee without caffeine, local rice, beans, corn, etc.. There is also the loroco, plant that comes from Salvador, we eats the flower, rich in vitamins. Papaya, banana, plantain,Yuka (reminds us of the terro in  Fiji). Tonight we will eat pinto, a mixture of rice and beans with Yuka and serve a French chocolate cake! Chocolate also comes from the farm ... There a lot of work here, we help voluntarily Gonzalo, his wife Mauricia  and daughter Lali in gardens in  mandala,  weeding the rice, extracting Yuka to take roots ...
Gonzalo wants to be an example for indigenous peoples in organic agriculture which he calls "bio-intensive", which could feed a village respecting the environment. "The earth is black at home, rich in nutrients, microorganisms, you can plant  what you want, everything grows! ".Yet these people are hungry and live only by hunting. Monocultures of banana and plantain have devastated their ancestral  knowledge of plants. They buy rice and beans to the "pulperia" at the corner. We going towards their home and field, accompanied by our hoes, we move the ground, make a compost, we discuss what could be done, projects, positive way of life, the future of Mother Earth, that nourished us .
